How to Make Marijuana Butter – Cooking Weed Butter

If you are going to prepare cannabutter, you want to make sure that you do it right. Cooking with weed butter can be great way to add THC to your favorite foods and it’s really easy to make. Weed butter requires only a few ingredients and it can be used in a variety of dishes. You’ll have full control over how potent the butter will be and it takes a minimum of 30 minutes to make.

Weed butter ingredients:

  • 1/4 ounce to 1 full ounce of marijuana bud
  • 2 pots for stove top boiling
  • 1 pound of unsalted butter (4 sticks)
  • A strainer or cheesecloth
  • A small container

Weed butter directions:

  1. Place two pots on the stove and begin melting the butter in one pot on low heat. Fill the other pot with water.
  2. Add the marijuana bud to the pot with melted butter.
  3. Allow the butter to simmer for 30 minutes on low heat, stirring about every 5 minutes. Simmering for 2-3 hours will maximize how much THC is extracted from the marijuana and will improve the quality of the butter.
  4. Allow the butter to cool for about ten minutes.
  5. Use a strainer to strain the butter. This will remove excess cannabis buds that did not break down during the simmering process.
  6. Cover and then refrigerate the butter. Use for whatever recipe you have in mind! It can be melted and drizzled on other foods, used for cookies, brownies and baking, or even just spread on toast.

How much weed should you use?

You’ll notice that in the above directions, I do not mention how much weed you should place into the butter. This is because the amount you should use depends on how strong your marijuana is. If you have really potent weed, you can get away with using 1/4 to 1/2 of an ounce for every four sticks of butter. If you are using shake or low potency weed, you should use anywhere from 3/4 to 2 ounces of marijuana.

Considerations with marijuana butter

There are a few things you will want to take into consideration when you’re cooking marijuana butter in your home.

The smell – Due to the simmering process, making marijuana butter can come with a very pungent smell. Make sure that for a least a day or two, there’s not going to be anyone in your home that would be unhappy with the marijuana smell. The smell doesn’t go away easy and it’s not possible to cover up.

The time – The amount of time it takes to simmer the marijuana butter can be anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. While it’s fairly hands-off and easy to make, there is a significant time investment to making weed butter.

It can take anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour and a half for the butter to take effect after consumption. If you have eaten the butter but still don’t feel high, give it more time before you decide to eat more.

The high – Marijuana edibles can have a very strong high and it’s difficult to predict how potent the butter will be. Of course, you will know how potent your marijuana was and how much you put into the butter, but the simmering process can affect different strains in different ways. Since the high is usually so strong, don’t plan to do anything for the remainder of your day. Edibles can come with physical and mental fatigue, which can even last until the next day. Be prepared to be extremely high and try not to let anxiety or worry fill your mind.

Don’t trick people – It’s illegal to trick someone into consuming marijuana. If you are going to offer up one of your tasty treats to a friend, always tell them that it was made with marijuana butter.

Margarine is not recommended

Margarine is a healthy substitute for butter, but because there are significant chemical and fat differences, it’s not recommended for cannabutter. If you do have to use a margarine substitute, try to find one that has high fat content. THC sticks to fat which means the simmering process will be much more effective. Coconut Oil is a good substitute.

What’s the second pot with water for? I’m imagining a double boiler, yet the instructions introduce the step without referring back to it. Just curious. Thanks for the info 🙂

I have recently bought a 3 vial pack of your product and need info as to how to use it in making cookies. I am a recent cancer survivor but have 2 small fractures in my spine. Often the pain wakes me up during the night and a friend of mine with similar problems made some marijuana cookies for me. I had a quarter of a cookie and slept all night!! Can I use the infusion capsules to make more cookies? If so, how?? Thanks
