A map full of pins doesn't tell you much
That search returns a lot of pins on a map. What it doesn't tell you is which shop is actually going to be useful when you walk in: whether the staff knows the menu, whether the flower is fresh, whether the line moves, whether anyone will remember you next time.
We're Seattle Cannabis Co. in Rainier Valley, and we've watched a lot of folks come in after bouncing between three other shops down the road. Here's what we'd tell a friend looking for a new regular spot. Not just our shop, but the questions worth asking about any dispensary you're thinking about.

What "near me" actually means in Seattle
Seattle has more licensed cannabis retailers per capita than most U.S. cities. You're rarely more than a 10-minute drive from one, and in most neighborhoods you're walking distance. So proximity isn't the deciding factor, it's a baseline. The real question is which of the shops near you is worth the trip.
A few things to weigh.
Hours that match your schedule
Washington caps retail hours at 8am to midnight, but each shop sets its own window inside that. Stopping in after work? Check that your shop is open past 9pm. Morning person picking up before a hike? Check the opening time, because not every spot opens at 8.
Cash or card
Most Washington dispensaries are cash only with an ATM on site. A few take debit. If you don't want a surprise at the register, look at the shop's site or call ahead. We're cash only with an ATM on site, pretty standard for the industry.
Online order plus pickup
If your time is tight, a shop with a real online menu and a real pickup lane is worth more than a shop that's two blocks closer but you have to browse in person. Look for shops that show live inventory, not a static menu that's three weeks stale.
Signs a dispensary is actually good
The Google rating helps, but it doesn't tell the whole story. Here's what we look for when we visit other shops in town.
The staff asks you questions before recommending anything
A budtender who leads with "what are you in the mood for, and what's worked for you before" is doing the job. A budtender who points at the most expensive shelf and says "this one's popular" is not. We train our team to ask first, recommend second, because what's right for the person ahead of you in line is probably not what's right for you.
Good flower shows its quality on the label
In Washington you can't open or handle product before you buy it, so let the label and the lab work do the judging. Check the packaging or harvest date (fresher flower keeps its character longer), look at the terpene percentage on the COA (the certificate of analysis), and ask your budtender how it was grown and cured. A reputable shop won't hesitate to walk you through any of it.
The menu has range, not just volume
A wall of 80 flower SKUs all from the same three producers isn't selection, it's clutter. A shop running 30 strains across different farms, price points, and styles is doing more work for you. Same with pre-rolls, edibles, concentrates, and topicals. Depth beats noise.
They explain the law without making it weird
Washington has specific rules: 21+ with valid ID, no on-property consumption, daily purchase limits, vertical IDs valid until they expire. A good shop handles all of that smoothly without lecturing you or pretending the rules don't exist. If somebody at the counter is sloppy about ID checks, that's a shop with bigger problems behind the curtain.
Questions worth asking on your first visit
When you walk into a new dispensary, a few things worth bringing up at the counter.
- "What came in this week?" Tells you whether the shop turns inventory or sits on it.
- "What's the loyalty program look like?" Most Seattle shops have one. Ours is built around a relationship arc (Visitor, Regular, Local, Family), not a points-for-prizes setup. Worth knowing how yours works before you spend.
- "Do you have a first-visit offer?" Most shops do something for new customers. Hand the budtender your email if you want to be in the system for next time.
- "Do you support local heroes?" Active military, veterans, first responders, healthcare workers, and K-12 teachers get a service discount at our shop, every visit, with a service ID. Other shops have their own version. Worth asking.
Why we think neighborhood shops beat chains
This is the part where we have a bias, and we'll be upfront about it. We're locally owned in Rainier Valley, and we think a shop woven into a neighborhood serves people better than a regional chain optimizing for throughput.
The reason is simple. The person behind the counter at a neighborhood shop is going to be there next month. They'll remember what you bought, what you didn't love, what you're curious about. That continuity is hard to fake, and it's the thing that turns "a dispensary near me" into "my shop."
