Buying weed legally in Seattle is pretty simple.
If you're 21 or older, you can walk into a licensed Washington cannabis store, show a valid government-issued ID and purchase cannabis. You don't have to live in Washington, and you don't need a medical card to shop for recreational cannabis.
There are still rules, though.
How much can you buy? Can you smoke it outside? Can you take it back to another state? What happens if you have a medical cannabis recognition card?
If you're visiting a Seattle weed store for the first time, here's what you should know.
You Must Be 21 or Older to Buy Recreational Cannabis
Washington recreational cannabis is for adults 21 and older.
You'll need a valid government-issued ID showing that you're at least 21 before you can enter and purchase cannabis.
And yes, we actually need the ID.
Being obviously over 21 doesn't replace having valid identification with you.
At Seattle Cannabis Co., we check IDs before allowing customers into the store. If you don't have a valid ID, we can't make an exception and let you shop anyway.
You Don't Have to Live in Washington
Visiting Seattle from another state?
That's fine.
Washington residency isn't required to purchase recreational cannabis. If you're at least 21 and have acceptable government-issued identification, you can shop at a licensed Washington cannabis retailer.
What you can't do is take that cannabis across state lines.
Cannabis remains federally illegal, and crossing state lines with cannabis is prohibited even if you're traveling between two states where adult-use cannabis is legal.

Only Buy Cannabis From a Licensed Washington Retailer
Legal cannabis has to come from a state-licensed cannabis store.
Washington's regulated cannabis market includes licensed growers, processors and retailers. Products sold through licensed stores are subject to state requirements for testing, packaging, labeling and tracking.
If you're unsure whether a cannabis store is licensed, Washington's Liquor and Cannabis Board maintains information on licensed retailers.

How Much Weed Can You Buy in Washington?
Washington has legal purchase and possession limits for recreational cannabis.
An adult 21 or older may purchase and possess up to:
* 1 ounce of usable cannabis flower
* 16 ounces of cannabis-infused products in solid form
* 72 ounces of cannabis-infused products in liquid form
* 7 grams of cannabis concentrate
Those categories matter because Washington doesn't treat every cannabis product as though it were an ounce of flower.
Flower, concentrates, solid edibles and cannabis beverages each have their own limits.
If you're making a larger purchase and aren't sure whether you're approaching a legal limit, ask your budtender.

Can You Buy Edibles and Vapes in Seattle?
Yes.
Legal Seattle cannabis stores can carry much more than flower.
Depending on the store's current inventory, you'll find products like:
* Cannabis flower
* Pre-rolls
* Infused pre-rolls
* Vape cartridges
* Disposable vapes
* Concentrates
* Gummies
* Chocolates and other solid edibles
* Cannabis beverages
* Tinctures
* Capsules
* Topicals
* CBD products

You aren't expected to become a cannabis expert before walking through the door.
Can You Smoke Weed in Public in Seattle?
No.
This is probably one of the most important things for visitors to understand.
Legal cannabis does not mean you can smoke a joint anywhere you want.
Washington prohibits public cannabis consumption. That includes consuming cannabis in places such as public parks, sidewalks, restaurants and concerts.
And the rule isn't limited to smoking.
Public consumption restrictions also apply to vaping and eating cannabis products.
So buying a pack of gummies legally doesn't mean you can immediately open them and start eating them while walking down the sidewalk.
Purchase and possession may be legal, but you still need an appropriate private place to consume.
What About Hotels and Rental Properties?
Check the property's rules.
Hotels, vacation rentals, apartments and other properties can establish their own cannabis and smoking policies.
Don't assume that because cannabis is legal in Washington, your hotel automatically allows you to smoke in the room or on the property.
If you're visiting Seattle and aren't sure, ask the property before consuming cannabis there.
Can You Drive With Cannabis in the Car?
There are rules for transporting cannabis in a vehicle.
Washington requires cannabis in a vehicle to remain in its original container with an unbroken seal and to be stored in the trunk or another area that isn't occupied or accessible by the driver or passengers.
The glove compartment doesn't count as an acceptable storage area.
And obviously:
Don't drive high.
Legal cannabis didn't make impaired driving legal.
If you've consumed cannabis and you're impaired, use a rideshare, taxi, public transportation or a sober driver.
Can You Take Washington Weed Home With You?
If "home" means somewhere else in Washington, you can legally possess cannabis within Washington as long as you're following state law and staying within the possession limits.
If "home" means another state, that's different.
You cannot legally take cannabis across state lines.
That includes driving across the border into another state.
It also means you shouldn't take cannabis to the airport expecting to fly home with it.
The fact that cannabis may also be legal at your destination doesn't change the federal restrictions on transporting it across state lines.
What About Medical Cannabis in Washington?
Washington also has a medical cannabis program, and the rules are different from ordinary recreational cannabis.
This is one area where Seattle Cannabis Co. is a little different from a standard recreational weed store.
We're medically endorsed.
Qualifying patients can receive a medical cannabis authorization from an eligible healthcare practitioner. A medically endorsed cannabis retailer with a certified medical cannabis consultant can then register eligible patients in Washington's Medical Cannabis Registry and issue a medical cannabis recognition card.
That recognition card provides benefits that aren't available to ordinary recreational customers.
What Are the Purchase Limits for Registered Medical Cannabis Patients?
Qualifying patients and designated providers who are entered into Washington's Medical Cannabis Registry have higher legal purchase limits.
Recognition card holders may purchase up to:
* 3 ounces of usable cannabis
* 48 ounces of cannabis-infused products in solid form
* 216 ounces of cannabis-infused products in liquid form
* 21 grams of cannabis concentrate
That's three times the recreational purchase limits.
Medical patients also have additional rights under Washington law related to medically compliant products and, when authorized, home cultivation.

Do Medical Cannabis Patients Pay the Same Taxes?
Not always.
Washington provides tax exemptions for qualifying purchases made by registered patients and designated providers with valid medical cannabis recognition cards.
The exact exemption depends on the product and whether it meets Washington Department of Health medical cannabis requirements.
That's another reason it matters to tell us you're a registered medical patient before the transaction is completed.
We need to properly verify your recognition card and process the purchase as a medical transaction.
Do You Need a Medical Card to Buy Weed in Seattle?
If you're 21 or older and shopping for recreational cannabis, no.
You only need valid identification showing that you're at least 21.
Washington's medical cannabis recognition card is for qualifying patients who participate in the state's medical cannabis program and want access to the benefits associated with registration.
So if you're simply visiting Seattle and want to legally buy a pre-roll, some flower or a pack of gummies, you don't need to go through the medical program first.
Can Someone Under 21 Buy Medical Cannabis?
Washington's medical cannabis program has separate rules for qualifying patients.
Registered patients between 18 and 20 may purchase cannabis from a medically endorsed store with a valid recognition card.
There are additional requirements for patients under 18, including involvement of a designated provider who is their parent or legal guardian.
This is very different from recreational cannabis, which remains 21+.
If you're a medical patient under 21, call the medically endorsed retailer before visiting if you have questions about what documentation you'll need.
Can You Grow Cannabis at Home in Seattle?
For ordinary recreational consumers, Washington does not generally allow home growing cannabis for personal recreational use.
Medical cannabis is different.
Qualifying patients who are properly authorized may have home cultivation rights under Washington's medical cannabis laws. The number of plants a patient may grow depends on their authorization and registry status.
So don't assume that because you can legally buy weed in Seattle, you can legally plant a few cannabis plants in your backyard.
Washington's home-grow rules are much more restrictive than some other legal cannabis states.
Your First Visit to a Seattle Weed Store
If you've never been inside a legal cannabis store before, there's really no reason to be intimidated.
Bring your ID.
Have an idea of how much you'd like to spend.
Then tell your budtender what you're looking for.
You can be as specific as:
"I want a half-ounce of flower and I don't want to spend more than $80."
Or as vague as:
"I haven't smoked weed in 15 years. Please help me."
Both are completely acceptable.
A good budtender should ask questions and help you narrow down the options rather than expecting you to understand every strain, cannabinoid, terpene and extraction method on the menu.
